“Ciro’s was a hip London establishment (before another
popular one opened up in Los Angeles in 1940), that had as their bartender
Harry McElhone (author of ABC of Cocktails), at which Jimmy took over when
Harry went off to Paris. This book is one of the only books with the… Pegu Club
Cocktail, and has quite a few pages of interestingly worded toasts. And in its
remarks answers what was at that time Old Time Gin and Dry Gin, as well as a
very different grenadine than pomegranates or red syrup” (Ross Bolton).
While Jimmy’s identity remains uncertain, some hint he may be Jimmy Charters of
the Monte Carlo and Deauville.
This particular cocktail book consciously designed quite in keeping with such standard works as the family cook-book .
Here you will find nothing to do with jiggers nor gills. All such occult
references have been abandoned and.your favorite drink’s make-up is listed in
terms of ‘parts’, so that even a child of five may prepare his (or her)
favorite beverage without.running to ask Daddy: ‘Please, what is a jigger?’.
This, in short, is a work dedicated to the simplification of serious and
scientific drinking. The ‘part’ of course, is of elastic size, its final extent
to be determined by the student. If he desires he may use a bathtub.”
251 alphabetically presented cocktail recipes (including the
Bunny’s Hug, The De Rigeur, The Gloom Raiser, The Leave-It-To-Me, the Pegu
Club, White Cargo, and The Zaza) . Blank pages for writing one’s own cocktail
recipes, followed by 8 pages of toasts.
